Minutes of NEXPReS MS601 telecon on 2010-11-30

The telecon was held on 2010-11-30 and started at 11:00 UTC.

Participants: Simon Casey (OSO), Neal Jackson (UMAN), Gerben van Malenstreijn (SURFnet), Ralph Spencer (UMAN), Paul Boven (JIVE).

Chris Philips (ATNF) also joined the conference but could only listen, not speak, due to technical difficulties.

Agenda:

  1. Discuss updates made to MS601
  2. What contributions do we need most, and who will write them
  3. Discuss architecture options
  4. Proposal: Move to fixed bi-weekly (or weekly) telecons in the new year
  5. AOB

Minutes:

The MS601 document is finally starting to take shape. Contributions from SURFnet and UMAN have been integrated. From the transport section, we could still use a small entry on OTN. We have a contribution on Autobahn, but would like to have someone from that project make it up-to-date: Ralph Spencer will contact Dimitra Simeonidou from Essex for comments.

Paul suggested that the hardware for network testing and the storage systems being developed in WP8 might be shared: this hardware specifically needs to be able to send stored VLBI data out as fast as the network can handle. This needs to be discussed with the WP8 activity leader and participants. Ralph and Neal agreed with the suggestion, adding that they just have published a job opening for someone to work on NEXPReS, who will be active in both WP6 and WP8.

JIVE has had an opening advertised, but been unable to find a suitable candidate so far, and Paul asked all participants to point out the opening to anyone they might know who's looking for a position.

On the subject of feedback, Ralph suggested to include the data that is presented to the EVN board such as number of observations, network time etc. Neal added that getting user feedback would be very difficult and is not something we are familiar with, and that it would be preferable to use the high-level reporting that's already in place in the EVN.

Gerben explained what would be needed for a first BoD demonstration. The connection between Onsala and JIVE would be the most suitable for a first experiment. He will investigate how such a path would run and whether an end-to-end path between OSO and JIVE is already possible. Requirements at JIVE would be a (possibly virtual) server to host the JAVA software to generate the BoD requests. As the NSI is only expected as a first draft somewhere in March 2011, the first tests will have to be done using the Fenius protocol. As Fenius is a centralized protocol we will need to send our requests to the top-level Super-Fenius that is run by Internet 2. As the BoD system does not handle customer equipment, JIVE and OSO should themselves take care of configuring their equipment at the endpoints in such a way that they can talk to one another over the dynamic path. Paul commented that the current JIVE networking configuration consists of separate /30 assignments for the interconnect between telescope and JIVE. These are isolated from one another on the central JIVE switch/router to prevent security incidents. But for a BoD solution, it might be more convenient to have all dymanic ports (at JIVE and at the stations) in the same subnet, and therefore with a centralized IP address assignment.

Ralph mentioned that we should also be able to connect to telescopes that are reachable through GEANT, not just the GLIF Automated GOLE sites. Gerben replied that there will be a telecon on the 1st of december with where interop between Autobahn/GEANT and GLIF/Automated Gole will be discussed, and he will inform us of its outcome.

Paul once again brought up the subject of having the telecon on a fixed time/date each week so people could mark it in their planner in advance. Most participants in the telecon agreed this will be a good idea, although Chris replied by email that the frequency of a telecon every two weeks would be too high for him to attend.

However, as these telecons do seem to help with moving things forward, we plan to have one more this year, before the Christmas holidays. Invitations will follow soon.

Actions:

  • Ralph to contact Geant regarding Autobahn status
  • Gerben to look into a possible path for BoD tests between OSO and JIVE.
