Transportation
After arriving at Amsterdam Schiphol airport you have to travel further by train to station "Hoogeveen", the nearest train station to Spier and Dwingeloo.

For train schedules you can go to one of the web sites below:
http://www.ns.nl/en/travellers/home
https://www.b-europe.com/Travel

For traveling by train from ‘Schiphol' to ‘Hoogeveen' or from ‘Hoogeveen' to ‘Schiphol' there are 2 options:

  1. Recommended: From/to Schiphol/Hoogeveen by switching trains in ‘Meppel'.
You can leave the train in Meppel and usually at the same platform wait for the next train to arrive (either direction Zwolle for Schiphol or direction Groningen for Hoogeveen).

  2. From/to Schiphol/Hoogeveen by switching trains in ‘Zwolle'.
Note that the arrival and departure platforms in Zwolle are not close to each other; however there should be sufficient time for the transfer.
Look here for a map of Zwolle railway station.

Important: make sure you take the ‘Sprinter' train from Zwolle to Groningen; this one makes a stop in Hoogeveen. The Intercity train does not stop in Hoogeveen and then you need to get out in Assen, which is much further away from JIVE (and get back to Hoogeveen).

Purchasing train tickets - at ticket machines or in advance via website
At Amsterdam Schiphol airport or any other railway station you should buy a train ticket (ticket has a chip) from the machine. These ticket machines accept major credit cards and debit cards with the Maestro logo.
Costs for a single trip are EUR 22,50 (2nd class) or EUR 30, 60 (1st class).

More information about purchasing a ticket here and here.
IMPORTANT: when you go in and out of a train you must check in and out at the machines at the entrance of the train. More info here.

In case you want to buy a train ticket in advance, you may want to use https://www.b-europe.com/
This site allows anyone to buy train tickets (on a specific date) for the Dutch railway system using any standard credit card and print out the ticket. Train times match the timetable of the Dutch railways (NS). Print the ticket and bring it with you together with your passport. The Dutch railway company only allows buying e-tickets with a Dutch bankcard - that is why the above website is recommended.

Taxi between Hoogeveen railway station to Hotel Spier or JIVE (to be paid by travelers)
From the station you need a taxi to take you to the hotel or the institute. A taxi can be booked by the JIVE secretariat or at taxi company "Taxi Ellerie" directly (+31(0)528 351 218).
Costs for a single taxi ride from Hoogeveen to Hotel Spier or JIVE are EUR 30,00.
IMPORTANT: This can only be paid in cash!

Depending on arrival times, it might be possible to reduce costs if taxi rides of participants could be combined. For those wishing to share a taxi please complete the doodle poll and contact secretary@jive.nl for arranging a taxi for you.

The taxi will be waiting for you outside the station. The taxi driver will know the name of the expected guest(s) and have a sign "ASTRON/JIVE" on view in the taxi.
