First e-VLBI science with the Australian VLBI network

On March 23, 24, and 25 the Australian VLBI network performed its first e-VLBI science observations. Sustained rates of 256 Mbps were achieved to the CSIRO ATNF antennas at Parkes, Mopra and the ATCA and 128 Mbps was achieved to the University of Tasmania antenna near Hobart. All data were correlated at Parkes on a 30 node Beowulf cluster, running the DiFX software correlator developed at the Swinburne University of Technology (Deller, Tingay, Bailes, and West, 2007, PASP, 119, 318: http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/~adeller/software/difx)

The Circinus X-1 X-ray binary system was observed and detected at 1.6 and 8.4 GHz for ~18 hrs over 3 nights. An announcement of the initial results was made in Deller et al. 2007, ATEL #1037. The full paper describing the detailed results has been submitted for publication (Phillips et al. 2007, MNRAS submitted).
